High Point Market - A few Favorites

I thought I would send you off to a beautiful fall weekend with just a few of the photos I took {on my cell phone} at the High Point Furniture Market this past week. I always come away from market inspired and love the opportunity to share with you some of my favorite moments.

The Verellen Showroom is pure luxury!

I love the way the Belgian linen slipcovers fall so gracefully over their furniture's interesting silhouettes. I noticed a lot of pure white all over the market and especially at Verellen.

This elongated, contemporized wing chair swivels and was extremely comfortable to sit in. Notice the interesting top stitching of the shapely chair at the dining table in the background

I would like to have three small cocktail tables in my new office like the stone tables above. It is a long and narrow room and these could be moved around for different functions.

Adjacent to the Verellen showroom is an incredible collection of antique and vintage antiques from around the globe. Texture offers a highly specialized collection of artifacts for the designer and architect that represents the 'texture' of the country where it is sourced. I have always loved old things that have an interesting story to tell.

{My favorite global find at Texture was this weathered vintage wine barrel. I also liked the woven straw market totes that came as a set of three}

{If you watch the National Geographic channel like I do you may recognize some of the neat things we discovered at texture - like these long boats carved out of a single tree}

Paper Dresses

You are probably wondering if I am still alive after my long break from blogging. I am finally back with lots of interesting pictures from the High Point Market. 

First, let me thank everyone for your words of encouragement. We had a fantastic week at the Antiques and Design Center at Market Square and have already signed a contract to show again in the Fall (October 12-18th). We will spend the summer and early Fall collecting more fabulous things. 

Speaking of fabulous things, Tom Delcambre, another vendor at the Antiques and Design Center, took my breath away with his amazing paper dresses. You never know what you will discover at market. The buzz at market is contagious with creative people feeding off of all the energy. It's something you have to experience for yourself. Market is so much about the collective creative experience and extends way beyond the innovative products introduced at market - it's the vibe, the collective of artists and inspiring people, the way everyone is dressed, the flowers, the food and the styling of the displays.

I love being around creative people...

Tom also makes these hand cut pet silhouettes.

The gallery wall {above} is a display from the Natural Curiosities space at the recent High Point Furniture Market. The silhouette of the lab made me smile! Something about the way the dog is sitting at attention reminds me of my best friend ~ Sadie!

High Point Furniture Market: Lee Industries

The Lee Industries fall showroom at the High Point Furniture Market is fabulous {as always}! I love how showrooms reinvent themselves every season and give me just a little hint as to what the major design trends are for Fall. I still have the Lee Industries sofa and pair of club chairs that I purchased from Circa Interiors when we first got married {20 years ago}! The style is still relevant after all these years. You'll be the first to see how I reinvent these pieces in my living room makeover in the next few months.

What is my takeaway from this year's market?

Still the warm neutral palette I love on classic yet modern frames accented with pops of color! I noticed the same thing in Suzanne Rheinstein's New York pied-a-terre on the cover of the new Elle Decor.

High Point Furniture market: 2010 Antiques Part II

The graphic appeal of these third world transoms captivated me from the second I walked in.  The rich gray, brown paint color was a perfect choice to display these old treasures turned art. I actually came home with a pair for my own home. I plan to use the pair I bought over a pair of interior doors.

Travis from BCA Imports shared interesting stories about his antique buying trips to Scandinavia. He explained that a lot of the homes as well as the antiques in Sweden and the surrounding countries are painted red because the predominant pigment available was a by-product of the mining around the turn-of-the-century. He had an assortment of clocks, furniture and accessories. My favorite from his offering is pictured above, an authentic dovecote from Sweden. Should I have brought it home?

Unfortunately they didn't have ALLISON. It would have made an impression with my new Frye cowboy boots!

{A. Tyner Antiques}

Veteran antique dealers, Angie and Hugh Tyner, selected an incredible offering of Swedish antiques clocks, furniture, lighting, architectural fragments, quirky found objects as art, jewelry from old roman coins, framed botanicals and Swedish books. The Tyners have had a strong presence at the High Point market for many years and their experience shows with their artful selection {and reasonable prices}.

I am always looking for interesting art and antiques with unusual shapes to mix in with books in bookshelves or to create artistic vignettes on chests or side tables. The pedestal mounted pieces pictured above and on the chest below all have a history that would invite great conversations and add new dimensions to any home's interior.

I have long had an affinity for Americana and folk art. This stall had all kinds of charming items that grabbed my attention. I particularly liked the old trade signage like the hand pictured above. He also had a large hand carved faucet that was shop sign.

Can you guess what the original purpose was for this one-of-kind lighting? They are vintage whisks from an old bakery. He also had some incredibly interesting industrial lighting pieces and an overhead light made from an old gymnasium bell. You have to see it.

I really, really, really wanted the hand wrought hinges pictured above. I have made a promise to myself to stop purchasing cool old things and save my dollars to renovate my living room. I am using all the willpower in my being not to purchase these lovelies.

Mary Barstow from Atlanta had a very relevant offering with great large scale decorative antiques, French and Belgium grain sack pillows and industrial lighting. The scale, texture and 'cool' factor from her booth left a lasting impression.

{Tusk Old World}

Jimmy Pruitt of Tusk Old World stocks horns from Europe with black forest mounts and other Adirondack inspired accessories perfect for creating a hunt club aesthetic. He was set-up with friends Andrew Harley and Antoinette Thomas offering an assortment of  interesting European antiques.

High Point Furniture Market: 2010 Antiques Center

New this year to the High Point Furniture Market is the Antique and Design Center located in the old Maitland Smith showroom at 229 Russell Avenue. I have my fingers crossed that antique lovers from across the globe will discover this incredible resource for all things old. The center features 37 individual shops showcasing everything from estate quality continental antiques to American folk art. Many shop owners within the market demonstrated a love for repurposing antique and vintage found objects into art, lighting, pillows and well, you name it. I had the pleasure of taking pictures yesterday and talking with the shop owners. They are a VERY artistic group that truly have their fingers on the pulse of how antiques can enhance the interiors of today's homes. What I like most about visiting with antique dealers is their eagerness to share their vision and the stories their antiques communicate

I will start my pictorial with images from The Art and Antique Hunter. I spoke with Mitra Kilburn and she explained that her century old antiques are gathered from around the world especially for interior designers and private collectors. The pieces have a warm and inviting patina and the color that only age can bring. The chandeliers from Italy will take your breath away!

{Time Frame}

My favorite discovery at the new antique center was the amazing art from Time Frame. Sisters Jean Galyon and Katherine Pearson have come together through their love of art and all things old to bring to you a special collection of art that tells a story. Here is a quote from the Time Frame website that I adore:

"Like all Southerners, we two sisters love a good story and believe that your home should tell a story about you –your family, your interests, your origins, your travels and your favorite memories. We launched TIME FRAME with the idea of making it easy for you to decorate your walls with unique pieces that make your home highly personal."

Jean Pearson Galyon was an environmental attorney in Knoxville, TN.  Having painted in her free time throughout her adult life, she sought a creative outlet for her knowledge and passion for art.  Katherine Pearson, who lives in the San Francisco Bay Area of California, is the former editor of Southern Accents and Coastal Living and now a contributing editor to House Beautiful.

Here is a close-up of one of the pieces of framed art from above. I love the aesthetic of this framed collection but what truly made me covet ownership was the conversation with visionary Jean Galyon. She explained "Every piece they sell tells a story. The collection above is part of an "herbarium" used to collect the seeds from an historic garden."

This shadowbox features antique framed military buttons mounted on their original display card. There's a reason why you love the color and texture of the salmon colored tissue ~ it's the original packaging! The color of this simple piece is amazing in person with the shiny gold buttons and the unmistakable vintage color of the salmon tissue. I love the 'crumply' texture the vintage tissue brings to the presentation!

Book author and french textile authority, June Laval, was there with a lovely selection of antique french textiles and copies of her book Antique French Textiles.

High Point Furniture Market: Floral Inspiration

I have attended the High Point Furniture Market for almost ten years and every time I go, I come away with the most amazing ideas. The funny thing is my inspiration is not always related to furniture. The people watching is incredible given that you have a sea of design professionals from around the globe. You might call it "fashion fusion". Should you ever get "a seat at the table" in one of the showrooms, you'll discover the food is also inspiring and delicious. While in High Point this season, I made note of the floral design. Here are just a few snapshots of floral designs that inspired me.

I love the simplicity of this table centerpiece~ long stemmed artichokes in glass hurricanes. I wonder if there is a place that sells long stemmed artichokes locally? My guess is that you can special order them through  Whole Foods Market.

This is also a simple idea that brings a rustic, farmhouse quality to the table. I envision a luncheon for friends with tiny pots of lavender in crumbled paper bags, tied with twine at each individual place setting.

A European. bread bowl filled with eggplant, artichokes, herbs and perennials graces a display at BoBo Intriguing Objects. I would love to create one of these arrangements for my kitchen table. This is the perfect arrangement for this year's Market as "organic" and  "green" are still the hot buzz words in design.
