Amelia Handegan's Beach Retreat

More from the little cozy, coastal cottage from Amelia Handegan! I am totally smitten with this little coastal retreat and thought you might like to see these gorgeous photographs from the recent article in Architectural Digest. You may remember that I blogged about this beach retreat just a few posts back but did not have these stunning photos to share.

This little hallway would have surely made the front page for my recent post on painted floors. Can you even stand it! I am loving this graphic pattern in all black and white, a great way to turn this little awkward hallway into a passage of discovery.

I have been captivated by Mrs. Handegan's use of color from the first time I viewed her work and the image above is a great example of why. The crisp white coastal shiplap walls and ceiling with the amazing textures from the antiques and well edited accessories mixed with the soft worn colors of the rug and pillows really does it for me. It's just so interesting and relaxed. I truly don't think I would ever tire of this cozy little room.

I should also mention that I covet the little chair in the foreground.

And this little jewel box of a screened porch...book by day, wine by night!

I used to do this same thing and collect shells from my morning walk on the beach and line them up along the railing. I never get tired of collecting shells along the beach.

I really, really want this rug.

From my earlier post, you may remember that these lovely curtains are made from burlap. The walls are painted pink like the inside of a sea shell. The palette and texture remind me of the sand and sea shells.

Are you traveling to the coast this summer?

The Fish and The Goat House

When Margaret Russell took the helm as Editor in Chief of Architectural Digest, I decided I would take a chance on the magazine and just see how she might update the pages of this industry icon. Last night, I finally had a few minutes to actually curl up with my July issue and discovered a few pages that caught my attention. I have been a BIG fan of interior designer Amelia Handegan of Charleston, South Carolina for many years and this issue features a casual, low country beach home on Folly Beach in South Carolina. I know you are wondering why I have entitled this post "The Fish and The Goat House." That is how Handegan has affectionately referred to this cottage on the online rental site and it truly reminds me of how I spent my summers as a child, in a beach cottage menat to be lived in with bare hardwood floors, rustic, wormy paneling and pure bright whites.

I have a surprise for you. This morning I wanted to share with you this casual, comfy, stylish little beach enclave from the pages of Architectural Digest only to discover that Mrs. Handegan offers this spectacular little gem as a summer rental here. I grew up going to the small coastal beaches of South Carolina and this little cottage is exactly what I want from a coastal retreat ~ authentic coastal cottage style.

"This place is reminiscent of how living at the beach used to be," says Handegan of the sandy stretch known as Folly Beach"

These incredible curtains and the valance are made from humble burlap!

An antique suzani hangs above the bed in one of the guest rooms. The walls are painted Benjamin Moore's Pink Bliss.

Handegan transforms an antique Asian table into the bathroom vanity and tops it off with a Turkish bowl for the basin.

Some of the compelling details from the Architectural Digest photos have disappeared. In AD the home featured some of the most amazing softly worn antique dhurrie rugs in soft pinks, tangerine and browns. Yummy! I couldn't find these images online so you'll just have to pick up the latest issue of AD to gush over the rugs.

I am looking forward to spending a few days at the beach soon! School is still in session here. Ughh!

Here's some of my favorite interiors from Amelia Handegan's portfolio:

Seasonal Palette: The Color Orange

{Amelia Handegan}

The color orange is seeping into my favorite color inspiration file. I am clearly a fan of a neutral palette infused with blues and greens but recently I have found myself interested in this delicious fall favorite. I like orange when presented with warm, dark woods and sepia tones. Charleston designer, Amelia Handegan, is a master with color and uses orange to its full potential. An orange palette seeks to capture the warm glow of a fire or the luster of the sunset. It's a happy color I think I could learn to love. I think maybe orange is one of the colors to watch right now.

Seasonal flowers offer an easy opportunity to add a dash of color. The lovely coral tulips add so much to this room's appeal.

Galbraith and Paul began making hand made paper shades and evolved into a fabric design and printing studio. Their hand block printed shades and fabrics are made one yard at a time in their Philadelphia studio. Their colors are amazing and truly shout their hand printed goodness!

Seasonal Palette: the Color Purple

The color purple is such a great accent color. Color experts say never to judge a color by itself but rather to view it in the environment you plan to use it. I think that is definitely the best decision when deciding to use purple. I love the color purple when mixed with warm wood tones and a Belgian inspired palette of grays and neutrals. I also adore the combination of purple and an earthy green {photo second to the last}. I admire Charleston interior designer, Amelia Handegan, for her masterful use of color. She is known for her warm palette and use of both purple and burnt orange.
