Charlotte Designer Showhouse

Are you looking for a really fun, design infused day?

I just came home from the 2011 March of Dimes Designer Show House in Charlotte, NC and thought it was exceptional. I'll share tons of pictures next week that you'll love!  I don't want to spoil the fun for those of you planning to go over the weekend. One of my favorite spaces was the covered Veranda by BD Jefferies. The above picture is just a little sneak peek.

516 Museum Drive
Charlotte, NC 28207

Friday, Saturday, and Sunday October 14-16
Fridays and Saturdays – 10:00am to 6:00pm and Sundays 1:00pm to 6:00pm

Admission is $15.00 at the door.

Circa's room was my favorite like that was a surpirse. It is so warm and interesting. I promise you'll be so glad you made the journey. The house is packed full of clever ideas and cutting edge design. Let me know if you go. I'd love to hear about your favorites.

Have an awesome weekend!

Lessons Learned at the Weekend Home Tour

I can't resist sharing a few thoughts and photos from the weekend's home tour! I know I am right in the middle of Exploring Cottage Design but I can't help myself. I have been admiring one of the homes on the tour for almost a year as I pass by on my morning walk. Who would have ever thought I would actually get to go inside and meet the designer? Saturday was such a crisp and beautiful day. I just love Spring in the South!

One of the most exciting things I learned at this year's tour is that there is a very talented, young designer in Winston Salem named Emily Taft. She is the designer behind the sophisticated interiors featured in the first seventeen photos. My photos truly do not show these interiors to their full potential. I am excited to share with you that Emily and I are getting together soon for an interview to learn more about her design philosophies and sources of inspiration. I'll share beautiful new images of this incredible home taken by a professional photographer. Don't you just love her business card!

Formerly just a kitchen tour, The Tour of Fine Spaces showcased ten homes in Winston Salem. From a DIY renovation in historic Old Salem to this new home that was built in the heart of Buena Vista on a beautiful  lot where a 1920's brick Georgian formerly sat. It's always hard to take an old house down but this designer took care in putting something with old world charm back in it's place. I came home very motivated and inspired! Here's just a few things I learned:

There's no substitute for an abundance of natural light.

This picture does not do these huge double french doors justice. The custom made shutters are at least 3 feet wide and 10 feet tall. The true beauty of these enormous doors can only be seen from the interior. The living room is flooded with natural light streaming through the large expanse of glass in these doors. It seems that Southern Exposure was a top consideration when these architectural plans were drafted as bright sunlight illuminated my path with every step  I took in this lovely home.

Simple, tailored linen drapes are chic, timeless and affordable.

I am seriously in love with limestone floors!

It was not until I reached the kitchen that I discovered the true genius of this light filled home. The kitchen features a glass window wall with glass front cabinets that give expansive views into the beautifully manicured backyard. There was really no way to take a picture of this design element. The sunlight was so bright coming in through the windows that is over exposed my shot.

Floating glass cabinets and big backyard views are covetable.

A pretty blue bedroom is always appropriate and forever stylish.

Creating little nooks makes a house cozy and functional.

Stark makes a wool carpet that looks like their signature sisal!

Even the most formal house deserves a porch swing.

Pea gravel makes a very elegant ground cover.

By arranging herbs with different textures and colors in a graphic x pattern, you can create an amazing kitchen herb garden with even the smallest patch of earth.

Benjamin Moore Ashen Tan 996 is a very pretty gray paint color.

Cafe curtains make a lovely kitchen window treatment, providing privacy and natural light.

It's hard to replicate the beauty of an old house staircase.

I had the pleasure of talking to one of the homeowners on the tour and learned that he and his wife had just returned from a year living in Singapore. His home was notably influenced by his travels. He explained that in Singapore they walked everywhere and lived more simply. I regret that I didn't get any pictures of his modern, Asian inspired renovation. The lampshades in the living room were covered with little linen slipcovers creating an almost Asian lantern effect. The master bedroom had a zen-like atmosphere with sparse furnishings and featured a bed on a low platform with dimly lite bedside lamps. The stairway leading to the basement was almost floating with cable railings. This brings me to my last lesson learned:
Travel will positively influence your interiors.

The Tour of Fine Spaces supports the Junior League of Winston Salem's programming aimed at nurturing and educating individuals to build healthier families and stronger communities.

2010 Symphony Guild Designer House

I was home last week for one of my quick drive-through-grab-style visits to Charlotte and decided to cruise through this year's Symphony Guild Designer House. When I was twenty-something and living in Charlotte right after graduating from college, I joined the Symphony Guild and one of my first projects was working at the designer house. Did you know that it is one of the longest running designer houses in the country? I always enjoy it and come away with many simple design ideas. If you are struggling this year to find the perfect gift for your mother, why not take her on a tour of the designer house and out to lunch. The 2010 Designer House is at the MET Terraces, 1225 Baxter Street at King’s Drive overlooking Uptown Charlotte. It is open through Mother's Day this Sunday, May 9th Thursday-Saturday 10 to 8; Sun 1 to 6. Tickets are $16. For more information: www.symphonyguildcharlotte.org/. I should mention Trader Joe's and West Elm are located in shopping area of the Met Terraces!

Dining Room by Phoebe Howard

There are so many things to like about this little gem of a dining room ~ the collection of artwork, the banquet, the varied seating pulled up to the table. You have to admire Phoebe Howard for always thinking outside of the box and bringing together traditional and modern elements for a room that makes a statement. Her color palette and mix of textures creates a soothing and restful space that makes you want to linger.

Bedroom by Ann Pearson

If you go, be sure to look at the detail on this bedskirt. We checked the resources and it is sold! Oh, I should mention that if you find something you can't live without, check the resources list. Most things are for sale.

I like the arrangement of prints ~hung above the bedside tables and over the bed. The simple yet sophisticated curtains are made from a brown ticking stripe in silk.

I also love the simple detailing of the shower curtain in the adjoining bathroom.

Bedroom by Betty Kohn
Betty Kohn's bedroom is very serene and painted a beautiful shade of pink. I've noticed this pink a lot recently in magazines, showhouses and on blogs. I think it is one of the "colors to watch" this year. This bedroom was a very personal space that did not feel like a showhouse room but rather like the well-loved bedroom of a mother, collector, traveler, or antique dealer!

I loved the sea fan placed behind the Staffordshire piece on this bracket in the room above.

This paint color is too die for! If I could give it a name I would call it Pistachio. It was not listed on the resources sheet for the room.

Sitting Room by Patrick Lewis & Catherine Walters of Circa

This room was so ethereal in person. It is painted the most attractive and restful shade of gray and the trim is also painted gray knocked-down-a-notch and in gloss. The mirror behind the desk extends all the way to the floor and the hostess said it took 6 men to carry it up. That might be a deal-breaker if it involved by own home and my own husband! The window treatments are made from a most-unusual sheer numby-silky-linen. The rooms that are done by Circa always look so simple but it's the extreme attention to scale and details that make them so restful and simply perfect!

I love this tablescape!
