Sneak Peek: My Home Office

I think I am the slowest decorator in the whole world!

You may remember a blog post I wrote over a year ago, Working Spaces: The Home Office. Many of the details have changed since I wrote that post but the prevailing aesthetic remains the same. I wanted this space to be a little more modern than the rest of my house. The room is decorated with all my favorite things and colors - warm grays, browns and a touch of soft blue.

Since I will be preoccupied with the High Point Furniture Market for the next 10 days, I thought I would leave you with just a few images of my latest home project.

Still on my 'To Do List' is to have the shutter guy come and take down my plantation shutters and have them repainted in my new trim color. I bought the reclaimed elm console at market last year. The library lights are from Visual Comfort and are my favorite element in the room. The biggest challenge I faced when designing this room was the long and awkward shape of the space and the fact that the large bay window that we added when we renovated the house twelve years ago was off center. The new built-ins that stretched all the way to the ceiling helped rebalance the room and give height to this space that has eight foot ceilings. The slipcovered chairs swivel and are from Lee Industries, a favorite showroom at the High Point Market.

This little shelf that pulls out from the ends of the desk is essential for this room to work. Since the chairs swivel, you can not put a table beside them. This little pull-out provides the perfect spot for a drink.

I bought these petrified wood candle holders during the Fall High Point Market and the blue coral from Bliss Studio last Spring. I love to incorporate things from nature into every room. All the fabrics in the room are from Galbraith & Paul.

The drum tables from Lee Industries are another favorite element in the room. They are so versatile and can be used as stools, ottomans or little tables. I hope to find the perfect coffee table at market this week. I am looking for something long and narrow that is made from reclaimed wood and possibly metal.

My best friend, Sadie, grabs a nap in a patch of sunlight. I am also searching for something special for over the sofa, art or decorative object.

Shopping Atlanta: South of Market

One of my favorite places to shop when I visit Atlanta or Charleston is South of Market. Coming from such a traditional environment where I live {Winston Salem}, I am just totally blown away by the graphic displays, bright colors, Belgian inspired furnishings and interesting art. I know the term 'eye candy' is grossly overused but it is the only thing I can think of that describes the SOM shopping experience.

My favorite Galbraith and Paul textiles are everywhere. Galbraith and Paul fabrics are all hand blocked. The pillows on these two Verellen chairs are in 'smokebrush' the same pattern I have selected for my living room curtains but in a grayish-blue colorway. I love the apricot color of these cushions especially with the utility canvas throws in the background and that interesting chandelier.

Vibrant colors and great graphic fabrics are combined with Belgian upholstery. Organic materials like rustic, raw woods, driftwood and linen bring warmth and texture to the setting.

You see neat old signs and typography everywhere when you visit the flea markets these days. I never really know what to do with it once you get it home. I like this large "U" used as art in this grouping.

Charts are all the rage right now in the collectors world. These framed botanical charts have great color. I like the way they float in glass with a simple, modern black frame.

South of Market is masterful with scale. This Galbraith and Paul linen covered shade was big and gorgeous. I envision it in a modern, coastal home with high ceilings.

These wingback chairs were made from braided leather. Old machine gears are painted white and framed and make a graphic art presentation.

I love the color of these gray gourd lamps...they almost came home to live with me.

This set of eight French chairs was priced as a set. They were absolutely amazing with oversized nailhead trim and a rich gray patina. I can only imagine how spectacular they would look pulled up to a dining table in a fabulous mountain home with barn wood and beams. I love them paired with this rich new green.

Old parquet floor squares are hung in a grid above a fresh white sofa. I love the texture they bring to this clean, modern, bright vignette.

Galvanized bucket lampshades hang by thick textural rope. A pair of old French dormer windows with a lovely gray patina are made into mirrors.

I saved the best for last...my favorite thing in the store was this pair of framed Suzani quilts.

Note to self...think BIG, don't be afraid to create your own art, have fun with your home!

Off The Wall Charisma

I love this image featured in the new TradHome...the work of Suysel dePedro Cunningham and Anne Maxwell Foster, the young duo that makes up Tilton Fenwick, one of twenty hot new design firms featured in the debut issue. This modern yet traditional room is from Cunningham's 19th century farmhouse in Woodstock, New York where the design team first worked together to hone their interior design aesthetic. This spring they opened a home furnishings boutique and design studio in the Flatiron District of Manhattan.

This artfully layered, modern farmhouse bedroom made me think maybe I am liking wallpaper a little more lately so I followed the link to get the details. I have to admit that's one thing I really like about online magazines...you don't have to flip back to the resources page with your magnifying glass...you just click!

Anyhoo...the wallpaper is from Farrow & Ball.

I like this close up {from TradHome} in the lower left hand corner. It shows a fabric that I ADORE, Indian Flower by Micheal S. Smith for Jasper, in a colorway that I have never seen. I really like Tilton Fenwick's playful use of pattern and color.

I have noticed a lot more layering of graphic patterns and colors of late with some great looking new wallpapers making their debut. Here's a few I find innovative or interesting...

Galbraith & Paul Textiles now offers wallpaper in their fabulous block printed patterns.

As I was doing a little research for this post, I learned that Lori Weitzner makes magnetic linen wallpaper...what a great product! As I flipped through the Weitzner Limited website I was captivated by the innovative designs and beautiful papers. Here are a few of my favorites...

I am in love with this simply elegant paper!

and this one too!

One of the most interesting new design products I have seen come on the market recently is Dwell Studio's new line of customizable wallpaper. DwellStudio lets you chose from their iconic patterns and icons and select color, scale and size. Their website also boosts that their new wallpaper line allows you to easily apply and remove their wallpaper with no damage to walls...great for renters, dorm rooms and updating children's rooms as they grow.

If you like the look of nailhead detail as much as I do you'll love the new rivets-on-grasscloth wallpapers from Phillip Jeffries Ltd..

Interior design by Kirsten Fitzgibbons and Kelli Ford of Kristen Kelli, LLC featured in House Beautiful.

Look closely at the image above...it has a bronze nailhead pattern.
Finally, it was love at first sight, when I first discovered this metallic graascloth from Crezana!

What do you think of the latest wallpaper trends?

Cottage Industry: Discovering Galbraith and Paul

What's not to love about Galbraith and Paul textiles?

It must be the artist in me that has thrown me head over heels for Galbraith and Paul!

Galbraith and Paul started in 1986 in Philadelphia as a cottage industry making handmade paper shades and has grown into a fabric design and printing studio with a collection of lighting with hand block printed shades, textiles and rugs. I am inspired by their commitment to the 'Studio Workshop Tradition' and enjoyed reading about their design processes on their informative website.

Galbraith & Paul creations are block printed to order, one shade and one yard at a time. Can you even stand it! How many fabric company's are still making fabrics the old fashioned way ~ hand block printed? These images of the printing process make me love it even more! Because it is printed to order, G & P allows for color substitutions and custom colors.

"The imperfection on each piece is the very thing that makes it special" Ephraim Galbraith

I couldn't agree more. The subtleties in color and unique textures created from the printing process are what I am drawn to. I love anything 'touched by an artist'. I also love their original color combinations and unique graphic patterns.

Galbraith's designs draw inspiration from diverse styles and cultures, including the bold graphics of Scandinavian textiles, the botanical silhouettes of the Arts & Crafts movement and traditional Japanese floral patterns.

I think I have found my dream job!
