I have not had the privilege of raising a boy but know that it comes with a whole different set of rules than raising a girl. For girls, going off to college is all about decorating their dorm room. Not so much so for boys. Several of my friends are in the process of getting their boys ready to go off to college and have asked me to weigh in with suggestions for provisions. Recently, I have seen several blog posts on decorating girls dorm rooms but non for boys so I decided to put together a collage of things that I think might be received well by boys.
{1} Cowhide rug, West Elm {2} Zigzag Striped Rug, West Elm {3} Vintage inspired industrial end table with weathered wood top, Urban Outfitters {4} Bike Gear Lamp, Pottery Barn {5} Taxidermy deer head, Urban Outfitters {6} Scoop-back scribble desk chair, West Elm {7} Brown dhurrie pouf, West Elm {8} Utility Canvas Company moving blanket inspired cotton coverlets {9} Bond desk, West Elm {10} Lux leather butterfly chair, Urban Outfitters {11} industrial desk lamp {12} Vintage album wall
Ever wonder what to do with your old albums?
I snapped this picture during the Spring High Point Furniture Market. This would make a great DIY project for a boy ~ bedroom, dorm room, loft or first apartment.
{vintage Swiss Army Blanket}
I love things that have a story or add character to a room. Swiss Army Blankets are all handmade and vary in color {usually a grayish-brown} and detail. They were made in Switzerland starting in the early 1900's and all carry the signature red stripe with white cross. Each vintage blanket is unique and marked with the initials of the maker and the year it was made. If you are lucky, a stainless steel coin or seal is sewn into the corner. They would add instant charm to any boys room!
A vintage Swiss Army Blanket would be the ultimate graduation gift ~ impenetrably warm, pleasingly soft and seamlessly crafted of sheep's wool and horse hair. Great for football games or at the foot of the bed. If you are really industrious, it would be super-cool to upholster an antique chair, make a pouf or cover headboards in vintage blankets. Available through the Sundance catalogue, ebay or at some Army Navy surplus stores.
