Purchased for a song, along with a set of 12 vintage bird prints from the same estate, this incredible bronze planter moves around my house with the seasons serving as a planter in Spring and firewood caddy in the Winter. From the same estate, the Rummage Sale received the sofa, pair of wing-back chairs covered in a floral bird chintz, and a coffee table with feathered legs, talon feet and a mercury glass, mirrored top. The needlepoint bird pillows, a 60's-ish durrie rug and all the accessories, also with a bird theme, came with the covey. I imagine the bird prints hung in an eye-catching graphic grid above the sofa in a grand garden room, an inspired room, decorated by the legendary local decorator Otto Zenke who had studios in Greensboro, New York City, Palm Beach and London. Zenke decorated many of the finest homes in Winston-Salem in the late 1940s and early 1950s. So, who knows, maybe they were from one of his....I can only imagine!

Green With Envy

 I wish I could have been at the Masters, in this epic year, to see Phil Michleson hug his beautiful wife after winning! It is always in good taste to be head-over-heels in love with your wife and not afraid to shed a tear in the public arena over matters of the home. It's poetic irony that a family man like Phil, who is so outwardly in love with his wife, should win the Masters at a time when the focus has been on the indiscretions of others. Yeh! This would have been the year to go! To watch Freddy Couples and Tom Watson defy the odds. To eat an infamous pimento cheese sandwich on white bread from my little green waxed paper wrapper. To bask in the sun in Amen Corner. I'm green with envy!

I think I'll have my own private celebration with a picnic in Reynolda Gardens among the blooming azaleas with my pimento cheese sandwich on white bread with an Arnold Palmer iced tea.

In 2003, Golf Digest hired Gourmet magazine Food Editor Ruth Cousineau to create her own recipe approximating the Augusta Pimento Cheese sandwiches. Here is her recipe:

Southern Pimento Cheese Sandwich

Ingredients: 4 oz. extra-sharp Vermont white or yellow cheddar, finely grated ( 1 1/2 cups); half a jar of pimento (3 oz.), drained, finely chopped (1/4 cup); 2 tablespoons mayonnaise; 1/2 teaspoon hot pepper sauce; salt to taste; 4 slices of good old fashioned white bread; 4 thin slices Vidalia or other sweet onion; 1 cup watercress sprigs, tough stems discarded.

To prepare: Mash cheese, pimento, mayonnaise, and hot pepper sauce in a small bowl with a fork until well combined. Season with salt to taste. Cover and chill 1 hour for flavors to blend. Spread pimento cheese evenly on bread. Top with onions and watercress sprigs. Cut each sandwich into triangles and serve. Makes 2 sandwiches. The recipe called for whole wheat bread, and I changed it to old fashioned white. It's hard to break with tradition. I wonder if the Master's classic pimento cheese sandwich is still just a $1?

Reflections from New York

Window shopping takes on a whole new meaning when shopping in New York City. I aspire to reflect the beauty, style and sophistication we discovered. The windows are seductive and beg you to come inside.

Treillage, Ltd. is the garden shop owned by Bunny Williams and John Rosselli and was my favorite stop while visiting NYC. Bunny Williams just visited Charlotte to speak at this year's Room to Bloom Symposium benefiting the Mint Museum. Circa Interiors was the sponsor for this event and hosted a book signing at their store following the symposium. Follow the link to Circa's blog and view the awe-inspiring tablescape from the private dinner they hosted to welcome Bunny. Lavendar is the new bling!

Roberta Roller Rabbit is one of two boutiques on Lexington Avenue by Roberta Freymann, the much-talked-about designer from NYC that brings the secrets of the world's marketplaces and bizarres back home for all of us to enjoy at very reasonable prices. Everyone loves a bright and colorful caftan!

I hope you can see the detail in this beautiful windowscape. We were early for our dinner reservation at Commerce in Greenwich Village and took a walk around the block. Below is the entrance to this lovely home and the photo surely does not do it justice. It is draped in spanish moss.

I am not sure why there were vintage bicycles attached to all the lamp posts but thought it made a charming picture.

The Flowers of La Grenouille

Following the recommendation of a good friend, we made a reservation for dinner at La Grenouille. Soggy and city-worn after a day of shopping in a steady downpour, we stumbled into one of the finest restaurants in NYC. We should have known that we were, at best, underdressed after the response from the french gentleman we randomly selected to ask directions."Good for You!". If we were the country mice coming to the city, you would have never known from the reaction of the gracious and welcoming staff. So happy that my fifteen year old daughter experienced the best New York has to offer and that she can return to this memory as trendy replaces iconic.

Since my return home, I have spent much time learning about La Grenouille and it's history. Charles Masson opened La Genouille in 1962, the year I was born. The restaurant is not only known for the authentic french cuisine but also the elaborate and lavish flowers that adorn the restaurant. I also discovered that the story of the restaurant and its beautiful flowers is available in a book, The Flowers of La Grenouille.

New York. New York. Spreading the News.

I can’t think of a better way to experience New York than to take a short cab ride from La Guardia and land at Bergdorf Goodman! Even on a rainy, dreary day, New Yorkers set the style bar high. If I would have only known that Hunter Wellington Rain Boots were all the rage. In a trench coat and Hunters you can go anywhere in New York, even the quintessential New York dining experience on the 7th floor of Bergdorfs. Designed by Kelly Wearstler, BG is everything it promises~ oh-so-cool with views of Central Park. The restaurant’s Hollywood regency style and nest-like accents provide the perfect backdrop to celebrate my sister’s 50th birthday. Although snapping pictures while dining is not recommended, it served me well. Enjoy! They came at the price of embarrassing my family! Next time, I plan to reserve a table for two in these over-the-top iconic chairs in the lounge of the café. The tables have a view of Central Park and the chairs can be turned in for privacy ~ the ultimate gossip-girl lunch.

Chasing style at Bergdorfs is not hard. Be sure to visit the hotel silver department, also on the 7th floor. I have the opposite of buyers-remorse wishing I had bought more of the interesting things I discovered in NYC. I love the patina of hotel silver and the story that each piece tells. Next trip, I think I will pick out a place setting of flatware and build on my collection with each additional trip.
